Reformation History

An introductory research guide for topics related to the Reformation period, 1517-1648.

Reformation in the 16th Century

In the early 16th century, western Christianity experienced substantial theological, organizational, and social reform. The printing press, invented in the previous century, expanded literacy and knowledge throughout Europe and threatened the administrative and theological leadership of the Roman Church. By mid-century, four distinctive reformation movements--Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, and Anabaptist-- each challenged the authority of Rome in their own ways. While these four movements share commonalties, each offered a distinctive approach to life and theology. Scholars today suggest a fifth reformation movement we label "the Catholic reformation," an internal administrative and theological reform withing the Roman Catholic Church itself.

This libguide helps students discover the historical roots of the four Reformation movements that we classify with the term "Protestant." These key books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, journal articles, and online resources are excellent places to begin research to the Reformation period.
