About this course and libguide

The first of two Old Testament Survey courses offered at Southern Evangelical Seminary, OT501 surveys the books of Law and History, Genesis through Esther, with emphasis on the background, authorship, date, structure, and content of each book and its place in the overall canon of Scripture. This research guide offers links to key texts and is designed to help students begin their research on various course topics. The resources in the guide help accomplish the five major course objectives:

1. Understand the theme(s) of each book in the Old Testament sections related to law and history.

2. Grasp the basic structure of each book.

3. Explore the culture and conventions of those periods of biblical history that are appropriate to these Old Testament books.

4. Study the principles of biblical narrative and their relevance for hermeneutics and exegesis.

5. Understand the principles, presuppositions, and arguments regarding the Documentary Hypothesis.

Resources in this research guide will help students be better equipped to make application of the Old Testament Pentateuch and Historical books to a contemporary Christian audience through preaching, teaching, apologetics, and evangelism.
